Muscle Memory.
I played basketball in high school. I was not great. But, what I most remember is watching–from the bench–players setup at the free throw line. They did the exact same thing every time,
bounce, bounce, bounce, flip the ball in the air, check the palm placement, do two mini squat pulses, release, cool hand flip thing.
My habits, your habits, they go through the same motions as at the free throw line.
Fluid,
one to the next,
less thought,
the body takes over.
For a basketball game, this is great.
In a worn conflict with someone you love,
muscle memory is exhausting.
Muscle memory is why change is difficult.
Your
thoughts
become
less connected
to
your actions.
Your body finds and remains in autopilot.
Finding change comes from reconnecting with thoughtful movement, reconnecting to the body to interrupt muscle memory.

It’s funny how some behaviors serve us well in one place, and not so much in another.
